Funding Guidelines
With a local content goal to increase the amount of New Zealand music on commercial radio, NZ On Air offers four funding schemes to assist the production of a New Zealand song, album, or music video. For more info, or to ask a question - check out our FAQs page.
New Recording Artist Funding
To be eligible for New Recording Artist funding, the submitted song must exhibit potential for commercial radio airplay.
You may apply with only one song per round.
The group/individual cannot apply for music video funding, or inclusion on a Kiwi Hit Disc for the same song at the same time. You can receive a maximum of two grants per group/individual.
New Recording Artist funding is available only for the recording costs of a radio single and the accompanying video.
Music Video Funding
To be eligible for Music Video Funding, the submitted song must exhibit potential for radio and television airplay.
Music video funding is available to the repertoire owner, applying for only one song per round. The applicant cannot apply for New Recording Artist funding for the same song at the same time.
Although there are no restrictions on the number of music videos that can be applied for over time, if unsuccessful, the applicant can only apply with the same song twice. Reminder: one song per repertoire owner, per round.
Album Funding
To be eligible for Album Funding, the group or individual must have:
a track record on commercial radio (at least two recent Radioscope Top 40 New Zealand Airplay songs).
potential for at least four more commercial radio hits (include demos of these four songs with application).
a convincing marketing plan (including a release deal in place).
at least matching funding from a record company or other parties involved in the project. Our contribution will be 50% of the actual and eligible costs of recording and marketing an album (up to a maximum of $50,000 per project).
Album funding must be repaid from domestic sales on the basis of one dollar per physical CD album, 80 cents per digital album and 8 cents per digital single sold.
