MARCH 2010 VIDEO FUNDING DECISIONS

This is the fourth Music Video funding round for the 2009-2010 funding year (ending on 30 June). In the 2009-2010 funding year, we have a budget to do 170 music videos, which is the same as last year.

The last two Music Video funding rounds have been the biggest in NZ On Air’s 21-year history. This latest round tops them all. We got a record-breaking 226 applications in the March round.

Of the 226 applications, 74 songs made it to the first shortlist, based on feedback from the music television broadcasters when we tested the songs.

However, as usual, we can’t afford to do every project that gets shortlisted and so, as usual, we had to go through a second shortlisting and prioritising process, as a result of which we will do 38 projects in this round.

The successful applications are listed here. Each project will get $5,000 to make a music video, subject to our standard terms and conditions of Music Video funding.

Decisions are based on the airplay potential of the song and the strategic value of the music video to the radio airplay campaign. Airplay potential is measured by first testing the songs with the music television broadcasters, and then we factor in current radio priorities.

There is one more funding round to go before 30 June. Applications close on Friday 23 April and decisions will be announced on 10 June.
